The song, which was written about the United States Congress sponsored radio station which broadcasts across Eastern and Southeastern Europe, Russia, the Caucasus, Central Asia, and the Middle East, helped R.E.M. establish a name for themselves.
Currently known as "Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty," the station's broadcasts reach 35 million listeners.
Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty seeks to promote "democratic values and institutions by disseminating factual information and ideas" on the basis that democracy requires the population to be well-informed.
