I Have Conquered The World, But What Did I Have?
Without Love (There Is Nothing) makes no positive corollary to the idea that "It is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all."

Instead, the lyrics suggest that both would be losing situations.

In a sense Elvis had conquered the world, at least as the King Of Rock 'N' Roll. With that unique perspective he was in a position to pose the question, "But what did I have?"

Born Arnold George Dorsey, Humperdinck became first known for his ability to impersonate Jerry Lewis. Jerry Lewis himself thought so, and so did Lewis' fans who dubbed him Gerry Dorsey, which he used as his stage name until 1965.

As his popularity was gaining, a bout with tuberculosis put the singer out of commission for six months and many people assumed his career was over.

It was then that his manager suggested changing his name to "Englebert Humperdinck." The name was that of the Austrian composer who wrote the musical score to the Grimm Brother's fairy tale "Hansel and Gretel" and the idea was that it would be outrageous enough to be memorable.

Humperdinck's self-confidence and sense of humor played a large part in the success of the name change. Going under such as strange name, you have to be able to laugh at yourself.

Humperdinck has also made a successful crossover to reach younger generations with appearances on "MTV Beach House", "Chilling with the Weaze" and "Oddville."

Dubbed the "King Of Romance," Humperdinck also gave influence to the "King Of Rock 'N' Roll," as it was Humperdinck who first wore sideburns and flamboyant jumpsuits. Humperdinck likes to joke that Elvis "stole" the image from him.

He has received four Grammy nominations, a Golden Globe for "Entertainer of the Year" (1988) and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Humperdinck, at 66, continues to perform about 140 times a year around the world. Women still throw their undergarments on stage. Humperdinck's only complaint, "I usually think it's a waste because none of the underwear fit me."
